The mission of American Friends of Chartres is to raise awareness in the United States of Chartres Cathedral and its unique history, sculpture, stained glass, and architecture and their conservation needs. It will raise funds to finance restoration of the magnificent stained-glass windows, as well as sculptures. It will seek to establish educational exchange programs in the field of historic glass, to strengthen ties between the American and French cultural communities, and to enhance relations between the United States and France.
To achieve these goals, the Friends of Chartres will:
- Sponsor projects to specifically preserve stained-glass windows and sculptures in Notre-Dame de Chartres cathedral, work which will be done in consultation with, and with the agreement of, the Bishop of Chartres, and through affiliation with Chartres, Sanctuaire du Monde.
- Organize student exchanges between France and the U.S. in the field of historic glass preservation.
- Facilitate the dissemination of knowledge of historic stained glass in both countries, through educational and cultural events and visits to Chartres.
